oh say can you smell

I don't want to sound like a killjoy but this fourth of July I didn't go outside and check out the fireworks. Maybe I'm a little odd, but my though is this: With so many real bombs going off all around the world ( some of them being dropped by us directly or indirectly ) I can't stomach watching all of the fake bombs going off around here. I know full well this is a celebration of American independance and I fully and whole-heartedly endorse American independance and our great country but I don't want it at the expence of people elsewhere. When I heard fireworks going off on the fourth all I could think of was innocent people being blown to shreds in far away places caught inbetween two warring factions. Most wars start with rhetoric about this or that but they mostly boil down to economics-the economics of greed and slaughter. Our leaders say that it is necessary for us to sacrifice in order to preserve our way of life......necessary for us, not them. When was a member of a presidents family ever put in harms way? When was a major CEO's family member sent to fight in the infantry? When did any member of congress ever let his or her son join the military for active service in time of war ? Never. No, I don't want to go out and look at the symbol of " Bring it on !" because I don't want to bring it on and the hypocrites who say " Bring it on" are sitting on couches in living rooms across this big country watching the war on T.V. , not serving in it or being blown apart in it, either.

I was kind of fealing the same way, joyless, I felt wrong faking it so I didn't.

BTW - I believe, the last president that actually served on the front lines was JFK (in a U-boat WWII) and his oldest brother was shot down and killed as a pilot over Europe. That poor mother had 3 sons shot to death. Unimaginable.
